National Library Week!

April 7 - April 13

Stop in at both of our locations and help us celebrate National Library Week! Each day, they'll be free coffee/cocoa/tea and something yummy to snack on in the Reading Room at Cooper-Siegel. And you can earn raffle tickets for coming to programs, asking reference questions and checking-out/returning books! The grand prize is a family pass to Zone 28 in Harmarville! We'll also have a laptop set up in the Reference Department at Cooper-Siegel where you can share your library story on the Allegheny County Library Association website or share your story anytime from home or your mobile device! And of course, lots of great programming happening all week long, including: Voting for your favorite storybook character LEGO Day Little Yogis P.L.A.Y. STEAM Storytime – Sharpsburg

Designed for preschool kiddos and a caregiver, this STEAM-themed story time with Ms. Alison includes a dynamic story highlighting a Science/Technology/Engineering/Art/Math theme followed by a hands-on activity that engages little learners and grown-ups together! We'll also share strategies for exploring science and more at home.

This program has a maximum capacity of 12 children. Please register online, by phone, or in person.

This week we're making our own simple storybooks to celebrate National Library Week!

Queen’s Gambit Beginner Chess Club – Sharpsburg

Chess prepares you for life! Children and teens in grades K-12 are invited to join us for Beginner’s Chess Club. Players will experience chess with FREE interactive lessons and hands-on instruction. Chess combines concentration, planning, and thinking ahead with playing and competing against an opponent. Each week, prepared lessons and exercises strengthen each student’s knowledge of chess. After weeks of practice and stimulating chess games, the class will have a mini chess tournament with prizes for top players. Taught by The Queen’s Gambit Chess Institute, a Pittsburgh based non-profit organization dedicated to teaching chess and using the game to impact Pittsburgh.

This weekly meditation series is designed for beginners. Our guide is a Buddhist monk, but the meditation techniques taught are secular and are appropriate for all adults regardless of beliefs or religious affiliations. Free of charge and no registration necessary. Some seating is on the floor or hard chairs so feel free to bring a cushion.
