Designed for preschool kiddos and a caregiver, this STEAM-themed story time with Ms. Alison includes a dynamic story highlighting a Science/Technology/Engineering/Art/Math theme followed by a hands-on activity that engages little learners and grown-ups together! We'll also share strategies for exploring science and more at home.

This week will feature stories told by Ms. Alison with her original puppets and we'll make our own finger puppets to celebrate National Puppetry Day!

Winter Watercolor Class with Melissa Tai

Enjoy the beauty, quirks and happy surprises watercolor can bring in this 5-week course! A new lesson and demonstration is presented each week. In addition to watercolor techniques we will cover: composition; color theory; and linear, color, atmospheric, and planer perspective. Students will work at their own pace with guidance when needed. Intermediate participants are welcome to work on their own, with individualized feedback and instruction. MATERIALS LIST If you already own supplies that you are happy with, you do not have to purchase anything new. Paints (professional tube watercolors; you are welcome of substitute a red, blue or yellow that you already own. You can also bring more colors, but you will learn about color mixing) Alizarin Crimson Cobalt Blue Aureolin Yellow Brushes: 1” Flat #14 round with bristles that come to a point Paper: 140# cold press watercolor paper, Strathmore 400 Series (pad with the brown cover) 9” X 12” or 11” X 15” Palette: You can choose any palette with large missing areas. I like to use the white lids from food contains (cottage cheese, sour cream, etc). I will have lids to share at the first class, and then you can decide if you want to buy a palette. Misc: 2 plastic cups/containers for rinsing roll of paper towels spray bottle for water (nice but not necessary) masking tape

Queen’s Gambit Beginner Chess Club – Sharpsburg

Chess prepares you for life! Children and teens in grades K-12 are invited to join us for Beginner’s Chess Club. Players will experience chess with FREE interactive lessons and hands-on instruction. Chess combines concentration, planning, and thinking ahead with playing and competing against an opponent. Each week, prepared lessons and exercises strengthen each student’s knowledge of chess. After weeks of practice and stimulating chess games, the class will have a mini chess tournament with prizes for top players. Taught by The Queen’s Gambit Chess Institute, a Pittsburgh based non-profit organization dedicated to teaching chess and using the game to impact Pittsburgh.

Our guide is a Buddhist monk, but the meditation techniques taught are secular and are appropriate for all adults regardless of beliefs or religious affiliations.
