Learn to write beautiful letters with a pointed pen in this six-week class. We’ll work with ink and a metal dip pen to create the beautiful shapes of the classic Copperplate script. Students will then learn how to vary the classical style to make expressive contemporary letters. Beginner to intermediate students welcome. A supply fee (in addition to the class fee) of $25 will apply to first-time students payable to the instructor at the first class. Karen Nordstrom Roberts is a professional calligrapher with more than 20 years of lettering art experience. For many years she provided calligraphy services for weddings and other special events including marriage certificates and wedding blessings. Currently, her practice is focused on creating original art combining calligraphy and expressive art. She serves as vice president of the Calligraphy Guild of Pittsburgh.

Author Talk: L. Roger Owens

February 13 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Facing a "dark night of the soul" as he turned forty and entered midlife, local author Roger Owens was encouraged by his spiritual director to think of it instead as a "threshold of discovery." Rather than go on a grand adventure like walking the Appalachian Trail or the Camino de Santiago, he decided to mark his fortieth year by taking forty walks in a nearby nature reserve. With patience and attention, he explored the concerns rising within him: the inevitability of death, his boredom with life, and the reality of his changing faith, changing images of God, and changing sense of self. The result is forty short chapters that weave together insightful stories of his walks with accessible history and practices of Christian spirituality and the lives of saints. This field guide to the spirituality of midlife facilitates readers' personal journeys through questions of faith, purpose, and relationships. It is not solely a memoir, but a work of wisdom literature that uses engaging first-person narratives to explore universal themes and spiritual inquiry. Wise and imaginative, and with study questions for each section, Threshold of Discovery is the companion guide for a thoughtful spiritual journey. Join us for a book discussion from this local author. L. Roger Owens (PhD, Duke University) is associate professor of Christian spirituality and ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He writes for numerous publications and is the author of Threshold of Discovery: A Field Guide to Spirituality in Midlife, What We Need Is Here: Practicing the Heart of Christian Spirituality, and Abba, Give Me a Word: The Path of Spiritual Direction. Roger is passionate about telling stories in order to make the riches of the Christian spiritual traditions relevant to contemporary lives.
