January Adventures in the Burgh

January 23 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Join our curious and exciting group as we explore Pittsburgh and surrounding areas! Visit local venues, delve into fun activities and discover hidden gems in our neighborhoods. We meet bi-monthly and dates/times will vary according to the activity. This is an adult only adventure--ages 18+. This month we're headed to the The Heinz History Center for the Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission exhibit. Our tour will be led by the library's own beloved volunteer Ann Pistritto, a HHC volunteer docent: On July 20, 1969, millions of Americans gathered around their television sets and witnessed world history as astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon. His words are now ingrained in American culture and consciousness: “That’s one small step for (a) man… one giant leap for mankind.” The historic journey of Apollo 11 met President Kennedy’s 1961 challenge of “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the earth” before the end of the decade. To commemorate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the mission, the Heinz History Center is partnering with the Smithsonian to host Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission, an epic exhibition created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.  The tour is free and there is plenty of paid-parking near the center You need to register to attend, either online or by calling or stopping into the library.

Learn to write beautiful letters with a pointed pen in this six-week class. We’ll work with ink and a metal dip pen to create the beautiful shapes of the classic Copperplate script. Students will then learn how to vary the classical style to make expressive contemporary letters. Beginner to intermediate students welcome. A supply fee (in addition to the class fee) of $25 will apply to first-time students payable to the instructor at the first class. Karen Nordstrom Roberts is a professional calligrapher with more than 20 years of lettering art experience. For many years she provided calligraphy services for weddings and other special events including marriage certificates and wedding blessings. Currently, her practice is focused on creating original art combining calligraphy and expressive art. She serves as vice president of the Calligraphy Guild of Pittsburgh.
